Things to do in Lille on a Sunday: Wazemmes market, free museums on the first Sunday and places that close
Sunday is a good day for Lille: Wazemmes market runs until 2pm, the museums open, and they are free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month. The plan for the day, the bookings worth making, the closures and the limits of free entry.
Sunday is one of the best days to see Lille. Wazemmes market has its big morning, the museums open, and Vieux-Lille stays quiet until midday. On the first Sunday of the month, the municipal museums are even free for everyone.
You still need to know what closes, what needs booking and what free entry does not cover. This page gives the plan for an ordinary Sunday, a first Sunday of the month and a braderie Sunday.
What is open in Lille on a Sunday?
- Wazemmes market, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, 7am to 2pm. Sunday is its biggest morning.
- The Palais des Beaux-Arts, Monday 2pm to 6pm, Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm, full price €7. Its first floor is closed for works from 7 September to 8 October 2026.
- The Hospice Comtesse, Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, for a visit of an hour to an hour and a half.
- The City Tour bus, with Sunday departures at 10:30am, noon, 2:30pm and 4pm, for about an hour.
- Vieux-Lille, the Citadelle and the zoo, free to access, the zoo being free at least for Pass Lille&moi holders.
The Natural History Museum, however, is reported closed for works by the City in 2026, while an older listing still publishes its weekend hours. Check before you go.
What plan works for an ordinary Sunday?

Do the market early: by 1:30pm there is little left, and some stalls leave before 2pm. From Wazemmes to the centre, allow 20 to 30 minutes on foot or a few metro stops.
On Sunday afternoon, Vieux-Lille's independent shops are partly closed, and shops' Sunday hours are not collected anywhere. You walk there for the facades, not for window shopping.
Is the first Sunday of the month worth planning around?
For the museums, yes. The permanent collections of the Palais des Beaux-Arts and the Hospice Comtesse are free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month, with temporary exhibitions included at the Hospice Comtesse.
Two other free-entry schemes overlap and are often confused. Residents of Lille, Hellemmes and Lomme with the Pass Lille&moi get in free every Sunday. And since 1 July 2026, under-18s have got into the municipal museums free, wherever they live, so visiting children from abroad qualify too.
Free entry draws crowds, but no source publishes visitor numbers or waiting times for these Sundays. Aim for opening time, 10am, at the most popular museum.
For a first Sunday of the month: arriving on Saturday lets you be at the Palais des Beaux-Arts at opening time, ahead of the queue. A night in the centre puts every museum within walking distance.

For the museums, generally not: the Palais des Beaux-Arts sells tickets at the desk. For anything with limited capacity, yes: the climb up the belfry, the City Tour, and the guided tour of Vieux-Lille, at €12 in the tourist office's 2024-2025 brochure.
The City Pass does not exempt you from booking these slots. The tourist office says so itself: a place is not guaranteed without booking. Its advertised price varies from page to page: "from" €35 for 48 hours on the home page, €39 on the booking page.
The number of sites included is just as unclear: 20 according to the tourist office in 2026, 29 according to a 2024 source. Whether the pass pays for itself is worked out on our page on activities and the City Pass.
What changes on a braderie Sunday?
Everything. The Palais des Beaux-Arts is closed on the braderie weekend, both museum and garden, the stalls close at 6pm, and the centre is closed to cars. Sunday morning remains the calmest moment of the weekend for browsing.

What disappoints on a Sunday?
The Grand'Place on its own, which takes a few minutes to see: it is the Vieille Bourse and the streets towards Vieux-Lille that make the trip worthwhile. The zoo, too: a small urban zoo, pleasant with children but not an outing in itself.
