Before deciding what to do in Lille, the first question is not the weather but the day of the week. Tuesday closes half the museums, Monday opens only one of them in the afternoon, and Wazemmes market runs on just three mornings. The day-by-day table, and the plans that work.

This page gives the day-by-day opening table, checked on 28 September 2026, then a plan for each case. One-off closures should be checked on each venue's website on the day itself: we point this out where it matters most.

There is one contradiction about the Hospice Comtesse. A 2021 guide said it closed on Tuesdays only, while the museum announces for 2026 that it opens Wednesday to Sunday, so it closes on Mondays too. We follow the museum, and we leave the discrepancy visible.
What is the trickiest day in Lille?
Tuesday. The Palais des Beaux-Arts is closed on Tuesdays, so is the Hospice Comtesse, and the Natural History Museum shows the same closure in its published hours. Tuesday is therefore built around the outdoors, with Wazemmes market in the morning.
Monday is hardly easier: the Hospice Comtesse and LaM are closed, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts only opens at 2pm. Monday morning belongs to Vieux-Lille.
A trip that starts on a Monday or a Tuesday: shifting by a day, arriving on Wednesday and leaving on Sunday, gives you access to all the museums. Midweek nights are also the cheapest out of season.

Yes, but only partly. The museum reports that its first floor is closed for works from 7 September to 8 October 2026, after the Écoles du Nord gallery closed in July. The reduced rate applies to everyone during this period, against €7 full price and €4 reduced price the rest of the time.
It also closes on the braderie weekend, both museum and garden, and on some public holidays: 1 January, 1 May, 14 July, 1 November and 25 December. The permanent collections are free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month.
A museum that is officially open can therefore offer a cut-down visit. That is the best reason to read the museum's "Infos" page on the morning itself, rather than a guidebook.
Is the Natural History Museum open?
The sources contradict each other. The City Pass listing publishes its hours: 9:30am to 5pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 10am to 6pm at weekends. The City, on its Pass Lille&moi page in 2026, reports it closed for works.
We do not decide between them. The City's page is the more recent, which makes it the more likely. Check directly with the museum before you go.
Is Lille zoo free for everyone?
That is not established. The City confirms free entry for residents of Lille, Hellemmes and Lomme who hold the Pass Lille&moi. A secondary tourism source claims it is free for everyone, with time slots to book on busy days, without the City's page confirming this.
We set out both. The zoo is a pleasant add-on to the Citadelle, 1.5 to 2 hours, not a reason to come to Lille: it is a small urban zoo.
What plan works for each day?
- Monday: Vieux-Lille, the Grand'Place and the courtyard of the Vieille Bourse in the morning, 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Palais des Beaux-Arts at 2pm, arriving before 4:30pm so as not to rush.
- Tuesday: Wazemmes market before noon, then the Citadelle in the afternoon. None of the major municipal museums opens.
- Wednesday to Saturday: everything is open. A major museum in the morning, Vieux-Lille and the Hospice Comtesse in the afternoon.
- Sunday: Wazemmes market in the morning, museums in the afternoon, free on the first Sunday of the month. The details are on our page on Lille on a Sunday.

On the day the museums close: a guided walking tour of Vieux-Lille or a commented stroll does not depend on any closing day. Slots can be booked online, often with free cancellation.

Vieux-Lille, the Grand'Place, the courtyard of the Vieille Bourse during its opening hours, the forecourt of Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille cathedral and the Citadelle park. None of them needs booking, and none requires you to speak French.
